It is clear that the birds are sea gulls; hence the name 'An Ode to the Sea' which implies the sea is important to the artist, explaining why many of her photographs feature the sea itself or sea gulls. Furthermore, birds are often signified with freedom, so perhaps by the sea, the photographer feels free so she has portrayed this in her subject matter and the direction in which the birds are flying. The birds are flying outward from the woman, which to me symbolizes her being let free - perhaps the tight formation of the birds at the start signifies the woman's worries or hurdles that she has overcome allowing herself (and them) to be let free.

Aneta Ivanova
For the theme fantastic and strange I have chosen to look at the work of Aneta Ivanova, who blends photos of people into photos of scenery, whether it be trees, birds or the sea. Many of her photographs are expressed in black and white to enhance the shapes; however she does also portray some of her work in colour, creating bright, lively images. The photograph to the left is of a woman with the back of her head overlapped with a photo of birds that appear to flow in a delicate yet powerful way outwards as if being let free. The photograph is in black and white so the immense detail within the photograph is captured boldly. This image has been formed by two photos, of birds and of a woman, by editing the photos they blend well and the birds flow away from the head smoothly. The black and white filter has enhanced the lines and detail on the birds creating a more in depth photograph. The way the artist has interlaced their interests within their work interests me along with how a deeper meaning is portrayed - birds are often related with freedom. The photo is made to seem more spacious due to the large white background; however, the actual image itself is packed together - the birds flying from a small space into an open area where they can be free. The birds strike me as the most interesting as they take up the majority of the photograph, in addition to this, the incredible detail and formation of them instantly draws you in. I think the formation is effective, as is the lack of colour as it focuses on the lines and detail. Some of the birds are slightly visible on the face, but the black and white layer makes this more subtle, although, it could signify the worries within, before they are let free. By exploring Aneta's work I have decided to use photographs that interest me - perhaps nature rather than manmade structures. |
