The background is made up of more dense vegetation, whereas the foreground appears more spacious. The dark trees and colourful bluebells strike me as the most interesting features of the photograph, as they stand out.
This photograph specifically focuses on how light affects the subject matter, the light flowing through the trees creates a beautiful, mysterious mood, that draws you into the photograph, making you curious of what lays beyond the vegetation shown. |
Ian Badley
For the theme edges, I have chosen to look at the work of Ian Badley, as his work shows a variety of edges in nature. The photograph to the left is of bluebells in a wood; there is a contrast of colour and edges within this photograph, which makes it eye catching. The bluebells have been left to grow naturally and haven't been disturbed, filling the floor in delicate colour. Natural light flows through the trees, lighting up the wood floor, and leaving the trees dark against the colourful plants that grow beneath. If the photograph had been captured using artificial light, the image may have been ruined by looking artificial. He may have used a tripod for some of his landscape photos like that to the left to ensure the photograph is horizontal and in focus; also, he may have used longer exposure to allow the photo to be brighter - but not so much so that it's over exposed - this would also create a haze, where the light reflects off of the particles in the air, as shown in this photograph. The light flowing through the trees is affective as it makes the colour of the leaves and flowers more prominent. This photograph shows how effective light can be, and has encouraged me to experiment with long exposure as it makes the light more visible. |
His workThis photograph features various edges in nature, showing the shaped edges of a tree and the surrounding overgrown vegetation. This will influence my work as I would like to take photographs of edges shown in nature.

His workThis photograph shows the contrast of edges, from the smooth water, to the rough tree branches. This will influence my work as I would like to take photographs featuring contrast between edges.

His workThis photograph shows the delicate edge of a poppy amongst the more rough edged wheat. There is also a strong contrast between the plants that shows the edges clearly. This will influence my work as I would like to take photographs focusing on flower edges, and other plants.
