Final work
Statement of intent
I intend to edit my photographs further, in order to produce my final edits rather than taking more photographs, as I feel I have produced a sufficient amount of photos. I will refine the edges of some of my photographs to enhance the mood, for example, for the photograph of the girl with dog eyes overlayed, I will make the edges darker to exaggerate the mysterious, evil mood. In addition to this, I will adjust the black and white gradient of the roses overlayed onto the girl's hair, so that the colour slowly builds up and looks more effective. I will also adjust the brightness and contrast of my photographs to enhance the detail and tones within my photographs.

Evaluation
For this project I decided on the theme fantastic and strange as I wanted to experiment with different work to what I am used to, and to develop my Photoshop skills. Within this work I have used a variety of techniques using Photoshop and simply taking the photographs (taking photos of objects on printed photographs). This has allowed me to produce a variety of outcomes that clearly demonstrate the theme of fantastic and strange.
Within my work I have developed my ideas of what I will do with my photographs to ensure I link in with the theme of fantastic and strange; I did this when taking my photographs, making sure that the framing and angle will work when I overlay other photographs onto them, but also whilst planning my photo shoot, so I knew what photographs I needed to take in order to successfully complete my work. I sustained and focused my investigation around this theme by solely taking photographs that can be developed to look different and eye-catching, in addition to experimenting with fantastic and strange pieces of work. While investigating the theme I looked at the work of three photographers: Jerry Uelsmann, Aneta Ivanova and Mari Mahr, although based around the same theme, the work of these artist's vary, allowing me to effectively develop a range of ideas of where to take my work.
I experimented with different subject matter and angles whilst taking my photographs, in order to produce a range of different outcomes that I could develop further. Furthermore, I experimented with a variety of techniques whilst editing that I wouldn't usually use; for this project I overlayed most of my photographs to ensure my work linked into the theme. Whilst completing my work I was able to develop my skills and therefore produce more successful outcomes.
I have recorded my ideas through my written work and through my photographic outcomes, by stating my plans and experimenting. My ideas have been expressed through my statement of intent and my refined work, where in which I explained how I planned and completed my final work, including Photoshop techniques.
I have decided to present the eight photographs below as my final outcomes for this project as I feel they reflect well on the theme and my development within the project, including my additional skills that I have advanced on. I explained my reasoning for my final edits and how I developed them in my refined work (below), where in which I was able to develop my ideas and improve on my work further. I feel my final edits were successful as I have produced a range of images that link into the theme fantastic and strange, although I could take these photographs further by linking them into one another or into additional photos.
I am satisfied with my final responses as I feel they reflect clearly on the theme fantastic and strange and are an interesting representation of a variety of scenes. I am pleased with my progress within this unit as I feel that I have developed my skills majorly, experimenting with a range of Photoshop techniques and different outcomes.

Refined work
For my final work I decided not to take an additional photo shoot, but to refine my current work to produce my final edits. I decided to do this as I felt I had been successful with my past photo shoots and had produced a sufficient amount of photographs. I picked out my best edited photographs from all three sets of edits and planned out how I would develop them. I edited these photos further to produce my eight final photographs that reflect on the theme of fantastic and strange. For the majority of my photographs I altered the brightness and contrast to enhance the detail and intricate patterns within my work. I also cropped some of my photographs more to ensure the focus is solely on the subject matter, moreover, for my photo of the bridge (edit from Mari Mahr photo shoot) I altered the angle of the photograph using Photoshop to make it more level, although I only did this to a certain extent to avoid cropping too much of the photograph out. I edited the photograph of the roses in the hair further to make the black and white gradient more subtle; I did this by selecting the outline of the girl and clicking on the black and white layer, I was then able to use the gradient tool to drag across the photograph to reveal more or less colour. This was effective as it meant the change between black and white and colour was less harsh allowing the tones to blend into each other. |
