Although the hands create an interesting pattern that is effective, perhaps they are overlapped slightly too much at the bottom creating an irregularity, however, if they are a symbolism of life, than they are realistic as life is flawed. From looking at Jerry Uelsmann's work I have realized a deeper meaning can be laced into my work and the use of ordinary objects (or limbs) can create wonderful photographs.

Jerry Uelsmann
For the theme fantastic and strange I decided to look at the work of Jerry Uelsmann, who edits his photographs to create unique pieces of work. A style in which he uses is often the use of hands filtered together with a landscape photograph to create an interesting image. Although, the photograph to the left is made up of numerous hands - the wrists covered with an intricate design - surrounding an eye to make a circular pattern, the photo is abstract and definitely can be described as fantastic and strange. The hands appear to be made up of the same image, placed repeatedly around the photograph of the eye; this ensures the shape created is circular and that there are no anomalies in the pattern. The black and white filter causes you to focus on the lines and patterns in this photograph rather than the colouring. The contrast of tones enhances the interesting pattern created by the fingers, along with the wrist design that makes the photograph more eye-catching and complex. What interests me about his work is how he's taken simple, ordinary things such as hands and created an extraordinary design that captures your attention encouraging you to investigate further. The eye strikes me as the most interesting thing in this photograph due to its central position, and that it is surrounded by the hands, suggesting significance. In addition the dark colouring of the inner pattern and the eye itself draws you in. The artist often uses hands in his photographs, blending in ordinary limbs into beautiful or unique views and patterns to create unique photographs that reflect well on the his reputation of providing fantastic and strange pieces of work. Due to the eye being at the center, surrounded by hands, the impression I am given is that sight is a central part of life, it allows you to truly appreciate real beauty and design that you wouldn't otherwise be aware of - such as the design shown on the wrist, this can only be fully appreciated through sight. In addition, eyes are often symbolically seen as a gateway into the soul or truth, implying that no emotion can be faked through the eyes, therefore creating a very real photograph. |
