As this photograph is relatively close up, the photograph isn't very spacious, as the subject matter fills the photograph, leaving a small background visible. The large shell in the foreground strikes me as the most interesting part of the photograph due to the bold edges, this is also the lightest part of the photograph, so you are drawn to it. By researching the photographer I found out she was born in 1883 and died in 1976, therefore the type of camera she would have used would have been in black and white, hence most of her photographs are.

Imogen Cunningham
For the theme edges, I have chosen to look at the work of Imogen Cunningham as I feel her work shows a wide range of edges, where in which the tones enhance the shapes and edges within her work. The photograph to the left features shells amongst sand, it's unclear whether the photograph was staged or not though. This photograph is more effective in black and white as the edges are more eye catching. As this is quite an old photograph it is likely the lack of colour is due to the camera used instead of editing, although due to the subject matter, the photograph looks effective in black and white as it enhances the extraordinary detail. This photograph reminds me of the beach due to the sand and shells, however due to the colouring it gives the image a more gloomy feel when you think about the place in which it may have been taken. The shells are covered with intricate patterns, that capture your attention and draw you to the smallest of details. In real life you may not appreciate the beauty of these shells however when they are captured like this, with these tones they are more striking. This photograph appears to focus on the interesting detail and patterns found on fairly common objects that you wouldn't usually acknowledge the beauty of. The placing of the shells allows you to see them from different angles and compare them, it also emphasises the edges, in particular drawing your attention to the shell in the foreground. I find the black and white layer effective although some of the shells in the background aren't so clear as its quite dark. This photograph has encouraged me to edit my photographs to enhance the detail and edges within my photographs. |
Her workThe edges in this photograph are bold; the filter on this photograph has enhanced these shapes and made the subject matter more eye catching. This has encouraged me to edit my photographs to enhance the edges.

Her workThis photograph features a range of edges, shaped in different ways. This has encouraged me to take a wider range of photos featuring different shaped edges, and to also experiment with taking photographs from different angles and distances.

Her workThe edges of this flower are bold against the dark background, making them seem sharp and striking. This has encouraged me to edit my photographs so the subject matter contrasts with the background.
