My work
Photo plan
This photo shoot was influenced by the work of Jerry Uelsmann, and focused on scenery and body parts, which will be put together to create 'fantastic and strange' pieces of work. The photo shoot took place outside during the afternoon, and inside during the evening. I considered many angles for my photo shoot, deciding what would be more suitable for the subject matter. My outside photo shoot used natural light, whereas my inside photo shoot used artificial light to create bright photographs. I feel the photographs of the hands and the woods are effective; I will go on to merge my photographs together to develop them further and create fantastic and strange pieces of work.
Annotation of edits
Within my photographs I was attempting to capture a variety of subject matter that could over lay with photographs of limbs and faces to create fantastic and strange pieces of work. I experimented with different subject matter, trying to capture objects and scenery that would work well with a photograph of a limb/face. The photos were take on a Nikon D300, on manual setting, outside during the day and inside during the evening, hence providing a variety of outcomes.
The work of Jerry Uelsmann influenced me in completing this piece of work due to the artist's use of landscapes overlapped onto limbs, in particular hands - he slowly blends the landscape out to look more effective with the hands. I found the use of a plain background effective as it focuses the attention on the subject matter rather than the background. In addition to this, by having the photographs in black and white the detail is enhanced and the two photographs appear to overlap better.
I feel that the composition is effective due to the fact that I planned out what I wanted to do with the images so I could effectively take photographs of both limbs and scenery, in order to overlap them together. By having a variety of photographs, I was then able to experiment with editing in order to produce a range of fantastic and strange outcomes. Using Photoshop, I cropped my images and put two or three together, overlaying one photograph onto another. I did this by selecting the part of the image I wanted to overlay and then copying and pasting to form a new layer, I feathered the edge of these images to prevent any harsh contrasting edges and to allow the images to blend into each other.
The contrast of tone within the piece is effective as I added a black and white layer since I found this enhances the detail and prevents any differing colours that don't work well together. By having all my edits in black and white the focus is on the meaning behind the photograph rather than the colouring. I also altered the brightness and contrast of some of my photographs to enhance the differing tones.
In order to refine and develop this piece I would edit my photographs further, perhaps refining the edges more, and experiment with adding in backgrounds to exaggerate the focus on the subject matter.
